Lives and works in São Paulo, Brazil
Luisa Alcântara's practice places the viewer in a space where intimacy and distance blur into each other. She takes domestic scenes, figures absorbed in seemingly innocent gestures, and saturates them with an unease that exposes the moral perversity latent beneath the surface of the everyday.
What interests her is what the image conceals: dissimulated desires, truths no one puts into words. Alcântara's gaze is meticulous and caustic at once; it strips the viewer of any comfort and lays bare the friction between appearance and reality. By staging scenes that discomfit, she questions the supposed freedom of the one who looks and exposes the mismatch between social norm and individual impulse. There is a precision in her process that verges on violence, attentive to the textures of skin, the weight of the body, the point where desire and desperation meet.
Mortality and passion do not appear as passive states but as forces that deform experience. With something predatory in her method, Alcântara investigates the weight of physical presence, the shadow of depression, and the suffocating pull of desire, composing a harsh commentary on limit, moral conflict, and the murky currents that run beneath ordinary life.
