MEXA is a collective that has been active in São Paulo since 2015. Born within the context of shelters for people experiencing homelessness, the collective explores the boundaries between reality and fiction, autobiography, documentary, and the "theatre of the real," moving between performance, theatre, video, and photography.
MEXA has participated in several exhibitions, including the 36th Bienal de São Paulo (2025), the 38th Panorama da Arte Brasileira (2024), and Histórias da Dança [Histories of Dance] at MASP (2020), as well as group shows at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, Museu do Ipiranga, and the Biblioteca Mário de Andrade, among others.
In 2019, the group received the Denilto Gomes Dance Award in the "Perspectives on Black and Gender Aesthetics" category, and in 2025, it was nominated for the PIPA Prize.
In the performing arts scene, the group premiered Poperópera Transatlântica in 2023 at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts (Brussels), later presenting it at the HAU Theatre (Berlin), Teatro do Bairro Alto (Lisbon), Kampnagel (Hamburg), Transform Festival (Leeds), as well as in São Paulo (Casa do Povo and SESC Ipiranga), Santos (Mirada Festival), Curitiba (Museu Paranaense), and Belém (Pulsa Festival).
In 2024, they premiered A última ceia [The Last Supper] at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts (Brussels), Kaserne Theatre (Basel), Theaterformen (Braunschweig), Sophiensaele (Berlin), Festival d’Automne (Paris), Actoral (Marseille), Take Me Somewhere (Glasgow), and once again at the Transform Festival (Leeds).
In 2026, the collective premiered the show Reality Show, performing at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts (Brussels), Theaterformen (Braunschweig), and Sophiensaele (Berlin), with a series of upcoming performances and seasons scheduled.
The collective has been an artist-in-residence at Casa do Povo since 2016.
