Gregory Bastos operates painting as an act of speculation between time and space. His practice rejects the image as a stable record, summoning it instead as a field of suspension. His canvases are organized around axes and spheres that propose an interruption of linear space and landscape, introducing an internal structure capable of holding the image in a state of latency. The result is a metaphysical landscape: neither referential nor purely abstract, but operating on a threshold where form resists its own resolution.
Bastos's numinous abstraction implies a process of emptying the image's limiting structures so that something prior to representation can emerge. Here, painting functions as an object of action: it acts upon its surrounding space before it is contemplated. This visual economy presents itself as artificial structures of mystery. The canvas evokes a structured absence: pigment, layer, and plane all function as conductors for something invisible that presses against the image from within. His investigation treats painting as a practice of the immaterial, where the surface is merely the visible limit of a proposition operating in another register
